Maarja Nuut ' A FEAST' - HART OF THE WOOD VISUAL
Maarja and Ben have collaborated on two previous film works: A music video for ‘Kuud kuulama’ (which means ‘to listen to the moon’), and within the soundscape of Ben’s second (mid-length) feature film. Ben’s first real push toward an avante-garde documentary, a very personal film called, ‘A Life On Earth, that premiered at Encounters Film Festival in 2020.
This latest work is both the film for Maarja Nuut’s new release, ‘A Feast’, and is the end credit sequence taken directly from Benjamin Wigley’s latest work called, ‘Hart of the Wood’. Digging deeper into the world of avant-garde and blurring the boundaries of documentary, this will be Ben’s third feature film.
The Hart of the Wood film is part of a multidisciplinary art project exploring humanity’s relationship with the woods; taking us on a phantasmagoric journey through time, folklore, future-fictions and the natural world.
The conceit behind this particular visual sequence is the journey of a cell, traveling from deep underground through the fungal hyphae; then the rootlets, up through the roots; then rising up within the inner bark (phloem) with the sap and food; up through the leaves; and finally being transformed into oxygen. The imagery was created through a multitude of collaborations with scientists (Dr Patrick Hickey & Dallas Simpson), artists (Karel Doing), photographers like (Dan Wheeler at the Photo parlour]. Ben used plant based film developers, organic photography and printing techniques, microscopic imagery, home made film emulsions, and digital post production, to create an immersive and sensorial visual journey to Maarja’s beautiful music.
